In this newsletter we will be looking at our Rock Face sandstone, as well as getting to know one of the local stonemasons.
Our future newsletters will not only be focusing on our sandstone product range but also stonemasons who work with our stone regularly. This will hopefully give you a feel for their passion and experience.
Also we would like to show you some of the great new products at Carey Gully Sandstone. Pictured is a wonderful project incorporating our stone.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter and get some great ideas.

Rock Face sandstone can be found throughout many of Adelaide’s older suburbs, mainly in the tudor and bungalow style homes.
We have matched numerous extensions and renovation jobs throughout Adelaide. We can reproduce most finishes because we hand craft each individual stone.
Rock Face stone has a raised, craggy profile with sharp ridges, created by breaking off the unwanted stone with a hammer and bolster.
Rock Face can be used in quoins and pillars, by cutting margin drafts on the corners, giving them clean, straight lines.
Some Rock Face profiles are smoother when the ridges have been softened with a comb hammer. We call this a smooth Rock Face or a rough Pudding Face.

Steven Harper from Custom Stonework is a local stonemason based in the Adelaide Hills. We recently caught up with Steven to find out more about him and his passion for stonework.
Q: How long have you been working with stone?
A: I started landscaping and bricklaying 13 years ago and for the past 8 years I have been focusing on stonework.
Q: What do you enjoy most when working with stone?
A: I enjoy being creative and the fact that every stone is unique.
Q: What is the toughest thing about working with stone?
A: Trying to lay stone during winter and the constant shaping of the stones so they fit together perfectly.
Q: What are the benefits of working with stone over and above other products?
A: Most stone products will last forever if laid correctly. Stone has a visual advantage over other products especially stone look alikes. Stone is cost effective when compared to block or concrete sleeper walls.
Q: Tell us about some of the jobs you are proud of?
A: Every job… One I’m proud of is a house in Stirling where I had laid a couple of different stones together Basket Range Sandstone and reclaimed building stone. The end result was fantastic and the stone matched in perfectly.
Q: What do you like about Basket Range Sandstone?
A: I personally like the colouring of the stone and the fact it is a local product and easy to source.
Q: Which of our products would you recommend to a friend?
A: I would recommend the Sawn Wallers because once you have the base course level it’s easy to do the rest. So anyone with limited skills and knowledge of stonemasonry can give it a go and end up with an excellent looking wall.
